Tipping

Potential implementation: October 2026

What is the position now?

Employers are already required to have a written policy explaining how tips and service charges are dealt with and shared.

What is changing?

Employers will have to go a step further. When a tipping policy is reviewed, they will need to consult with staff or trade union representatives before making changes.

Policies will also need to be formally reviewed at least once every three years, even if no changes are planned.

What does this mean for employers?

Employers will need to build regular reviews of tipping arrangements into their processes and allow time for staff consultation before updating policies.
